Release Date:2026-10-23In industrial packaging procurement, the four major categories of paper drums—square paper drums, all-paper drums, fiber drums, and iron-hoop paper drums—account for about 75% of the market share. However, many procurement personnel have a vague understanding of the differences among these products and their suitable application scenarios, leading to two common consequences: choosing a lower-specification drum for heavy materials, causing the drum bottom to fall off during transportation and resulting in cargo damage; or choosing a higher-specification drum for lightweight powder, unnecessarily paying more than 30% extra in packaging costs.
Foshan Danky Paper Products Co., Ltd. was established in 2017 and has 4 professional production lines. It focuses on the production and R&D of fiber drums, all-paper drums, wire drums, and other products, serving customers in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, cable, and other industries. Based on Danky's years of production experience, this article systematically compares the three mainstream types of paper drums from four dimensions—material, craftsmanship, performance, and price—to help you find the most suitable selection solution.
The most fundamental difference among the three lies in the construction of the drum body and the bottom/lid:
All-paper drum: It adopts a completely paper-based structure, eliminating iron hoops and wooden bottom lids, and achieves environmentally friendly packaging with no metal parts through an integrated paper process. The drum body is made by bonding multiple layers of kraft linerboard, and the bottom/lid is usually paperboard or medium-density fiberboard (MDF), sealed with carton sealing tape. Danky's all-paper round drums cover diameters of 25–45 cm and heights of 20–110 cm, and can be flexibly customized.
Fiber drum: The drum body is made by winding and bonding multiple layers of kraft linerboard. The bottom and lid are made of plywood and need to be reinforced with iron hoops (steel strips) to ensure structural strength. Danky's fiber drums range from 150 mm to 600 mm in diameter, 300 mm to 1200 mm in height, and 3 mm to 8 mm in wall thickness, and can be adjusted according to load-bearing requirements.
Iron-hoop drum: Further strengthened on the basis of fiber drums. The upper and lower openings of the drum body are reinforced with hot-dip galvanized steel strips, and the bottom and lid are metal-reinforced. Danky's iron-hoop drums use B-grade wood-pulp-faced kraft paper (7.5–8 layers for the drum wall). The drum hoops and hoop fasteners are made of ≥0.4 mm galvanized sheet, and the plywood lid thickness is 5 mm ± 0.5 mm.

| Comparison Dimension | All-Paper Drum | Fiber Drum | Iron-Hoop Drum |
| Regular load-bearing capacity | Medium-light (≤100 kg) | 20–200 kg | Above 300 kg |
| Compression strength | Excellent (≥800 kg, no deformation when stacked 3 layers) | Medium | Good |
| Stacking capability | Fair (≤3 layers) | Good (≤5 layers) | Excellent (multi-layer stacking) |
| Moisture-proof performance | Depends on liner configuration | Good | Excellent (galvanized iron hoop + waterproof coating) |
| Environmental recycling | Whole drum recyclable and degradable | Requires separation of iron parts before recycling | Requires separation of iron parts before recycling |
| Dangerous goods packaging class | Class I | Class II | Class II and above |
All-paper square drums meet the technical requirements for Class I dangerous goods packaging, while fiber drums can only meet Class II dangerous goods packaging technical requirements. All-paper drums are fully degradable and produce no pollution when incinerated, complying with green packaging standards; fiber drums contain plywood and iron hoops, so they require professional recycling after disposal.
Under the same specifications, the prices of the three types of paper drums generally show the gradient: all-paper drum < fiber drum < iron-hoop drum. All-paper drums save iron hoops and plywood bottom lids, require fewer raw materials and processing steps, and therefore have the greatest price advantage. Iron-hoop drums cost relatively more due to the additional processing of hot-dip galvanized steel strips and metal lids. However, selection should not be based on unit price alone—the reusable turnover characteristics of iron-hoop drums may actually result in a lower overall cost of use in high-load scenarios.
The pharmaceutical industry has extremely high requirements for packaging cleanliness and sealing. All-paper drums have no metal fittings, are produced in a dust-free process, are odorless, and have no metal residue. They are an internationally standard packaging form for APIs and are widely used in pharmaceutical APIs, pharmaceutical intermediates, and other industries. Danky's all-paper round drums use food-grade kraft paper for the drum body, and the bottom/lid can be paperboard or MDF.
For export transportation of pharmaceutical intermediates requiring a higher level of protection, iron-hoop paper drums are recommended—galvanized iron hoops provide additional structural rigidity, and with PE liners or aluminum foil liners, excellent moisture-proof sealing performance can be achieved.
For medium-light materials such as chemical powders, pigments, dyes, coatings, and plastic pellets, fiber drums are the most cost-effective choice. Fiber drums are waterproof, dustproof, and well-sealed, making them suitable for routine storage, short-distance transportation, and conventional stacking of medium-light ordinary materials. Danky kraft paper fiber drums are widely used in chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, and other industries for storing powders, granules, and paste-like materials.
For fine chemical raw materials, high-purity chemical products, and other materials that need to avoid iron filings contamination, all-paper drums are recommended—the metal-hoop-free design completely eliminates the risk of metal impurity contamination.
For food additives, flavors and fragrances, seasonings, and other materials with strict hygiene and safety requirements, food-grade all-paper drums should be selected. Core requirements include: the drum body uses food-grade kraft paper; the inner layer can be PE coating or aluminum foil composite film; and the product needs to pass FDA and GB 4806.8 food-contact material certification. Danky can customize paper drums for pharmaceutical raw materials and food-grade paper drums according to customer requirements, supporting full-process customization of specifications and processes.

For light materials (≤50 kg), all-paper drums are sufficient; for medium load-bearing (50–200 kg), choose fiber drums; for heavy materials (above 200 kg) or high-value materials, iron-hoop drums are recommended. The vertical compression strength of paper drums should be greater than 8000 N, and the side compression strength should be greater than 4000 N.
For warehouse stacking of ≤3 layers, fiber drums are sufficient; if stacking 4–5 layers or more is required, iron-hoop drums are recommended. Danky fiber drums have a compression strength of ≥800 kg, do not deform when fully loaded and stacked 3 layers, and do not rupture in a free-fall drop test from a height of 1.2 m.
For ordinary dry environments, standard fiber drums are sufficient; for high-humidity environments or sea export, choose models with PE liners or aluminum foil liners, or choose film-coated moisture-proof iron-hoop drums. Danky fiber drums can use food-grade kraft paper or aluminum foil composite film for the inner layer to achieve moisture-proof and permeation-proof performance.
Pharmaceutical industry: Must comply with GMP standards. The inner wall cleanliness of paper drums must meet pharmacopoeia requirements and must not have the risk of fiber shedding.
Food industry: Must pass FDA or GB 4806.8 food-contact material certification.
Dangerous goods transportation: Must comply with GB/T 14187-2008 Packaging Containers—Paper Drums and GB 19270-2009 Safety Code for Inspection of Packaging of Dangerous Goods Transported by Water. Iron-hoop fiber drums must be supplied with a quality inspection report.
Export certification: Export API paper drums need to comply with destination country regulations, such as the special requirements of EU-GMP or the U.S. FDA.
